Cowley is a village contiguous with Uxbridge, in the London Borough of Hillingdon. If you did not know where the boundary was you would not notice crossing it, but it has a genuinely separate history.
History
The name is thought to come from the Anglo-Saxon for "Cofa's woodland clearing", and the earliest written record of the settlement dates from 959. St Laurence Church was recorded in the parish in the Domesday survey. The village has sixteen listed buildings, which is a lot for somewhere this size.
The area today
Cowley sits in the UB8 postcode, bordered to the west by Uxbridge Moor and the River Colne, which forms the boundary with Buckinghamshire. Cowley Peachey lies to the south, and the Grand Union Canal runs through the area.
Business and industry
Cowley Mill Road is a significant commercial area, home to Cowley Mill Trading Estate and Uxbridge Trade Park. It sits about a mile from Uxbridge town centre with quick access to the M40, M4 and M25.
Getting around
Cowley has no station of its own — Uxbridge and West Drayton are the nearest, on the Underground and Elizabeth Line respectively. For Heathrow, Cowley is one of the closer parts of our coverage area.
